In today’s environment, organizations are under pressure to deliver real-time insights while reducing the complexity traditionally associated with enterprise data. That pressure becomes even more intense during major ERP transformations.
One global consumer goods manufacturer, preparing to upgrade a key business unit from legacy SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA, saw an opportunity to modernize more than just its ERP system. The organization set out to transform its entire data foundation at the same time, with the goal of creating a connected, future-ready ecosystem capable of supporting both operational excellence and advanced analytics without introducing additional technical debt.
Building a Connected SAP and Snowflake Ecosystem
To support this vision, the company implemented SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) and connected it directly to Snowflake using zero-copy data sharing.
This architecture allowed the organization to align business semantics across systems, reduce unnecessary data duplication, and unlock governed SAP data for analytics instantly and at scale. Instead of relying on fragile pipelines or replicated datasets, teams could securely access trusted operational data directly within Snowflake.
At the same time, the SAP S/4HANA migration could leverage standardized data products and consistent business definitions, helping create stability and confidence throughout the transition process.
Creating a Unified Semantic Layer
The long-term vision centered around a unified semantic layer anchored in SAP BDC and extended into Snowflake.
With Snowflake’s zero-copy capabilities, the company aimed to eliminate delays, reduce storage overhead, and simplify access to enterprise data across analytics and operational teams. Rather than maintaining multiple versions of the same data, the organization could establish a governed, centralized layer of trusted business context.
This approach not only streamlined reporting and analytics, but also created a scalable foundation for future AI and automation initiatives.
Early Progress and Measurable Momentum
Although the program is still underway, the organization has already achieved several important milestones.
Core data models have been established in SAP BDC, and an initial proof of concept successfully demonstrated seamless zero-copy access from Snowflake. The team has also begun using Snowflake Cortex Code to help re-architect transformations and data models required for the shift from ECC to S/4HANA.
This has significantly reduced manual engineering effort while accelerating readiness for the new ERP landscape. As a result, data engineering complexity is beginning to decline, and business stakeholders are responding positively to the consistency and clarity provided by the emerging semantic layer.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
Like any enterprise transformation, the journey has required thoughtful coordination across technology, governance, and business teams.
Aligning governance policies across cloud platforms, establishing new ownership models, and coordinating multiple stakeholders introduced challenges that required careful planning and collaboration. However, these efforts have ultimately strengthened the architecture and positioned the solution to scale more effectively over time.
Rather than slowing progress, these learning moments have reinforced the importance of building governance and operational alignment directly into the modernization strategy from the beginning.
Positioning for an AI-Ready Future
As the SAP S/4HANA rollout expands into additional regions and business units, the company is positioning itself for a more connected and intelligent enterprise future.
The integration between SAP Business Data Cloud and Snowflake will support faster reporting cycles, more flexible data products, and a scalable AI-ready environment capable of supporting evolving business needs.
More importantly, the organization is creating a foundation where operational systems and analytical platforms work together seamlessly, enabling data to move with governance, context, and trust intact.
The Path Forward for SAP Modernization
For organizations evaluating their own SAP modernization strategies, the path forward is becoming increasingly clear. Connecting operational systems with modern cloud analytics platforms through governed, zero-copy integration creates an opportunity to reduce complexity while accelerating innovation.
The future of enterprise data will belong to organizations that can unify operational truth, analytics, and AI within a connected ecosystem built for scale.
